What is a chaplain and what do they do?

The name 'Chaplain' goes back to 337AD and St Martin de Tours who was a young Roman soldier. During a bitterly cold winter he saw a half-naked beggar close to death, so stopped and cut his cloak into two with his sword and gave half to the beggar to wrap himself with. The cloak was called a cappella. Afterwards St Martin de Tour's half of the cloak became a powerful symbol and was kept in a tent, then a building that came to be called a cappella or chapel.

The person assigned to look after this sacred symbol was called a Capellano or Chaplain. Today Chaplains in the armed services are perhaps the most well- known but can be found in every walk of life- including industry, shopping centres, the police, prisons, hospitals, care homes and retirement living giving comfort and help where needed.
